Our Products Hokuto Mushroom Research

The Hokto Corporation produces mushrooms at twenty-five facilities across Japan and starting in 2009, at our brand-new growing facility in the United States. Our goal is to guarantee timely delivery of the freshest, best-tasting mushrooms to consumers around the world.

We produce and sell four types of mushrooms: King Trumpet (Eryngii or King Oyster); Maitake ("hen of the woods"); Brown Beech (Bunashimeji); and White Beech (BunapiŽ). Our US facility is the only one of its kind to produce all four varieties under the same roof.

Each mushroom we grow makes the most of our highly sophisticated mushroom cultivation technology. To ensure continued research and development of the highest-quality mushrooms to provide to consumers, we also maintain a specialized research center in Japan known as the Mushroom General Research Institute.

Our mushrooms are both environmentally and consumer friendly. Hokto and some of our affiliated retailers sell our maitake, brown beech and white beech mushrooms in "pillow packs"-gas-permeable film packaging. Without trays, there is minimal waste packaging. We use environmentally friendly, recyclable polypropylene films (recycle code #5). We cultivate mushrooms naturally, yet under the strictest possible hygienic standards and quality controls-free of chemicals and additives. Our culture media (the "substrate" the mushrooms grow in) are 100% organic. We typically use a mixture of corncob meal (ground cobs of non-genetically-modified "NGMO" corn) and rice bran as culture media. The substrate is so pure, we recycle it as animal fodder after we harvest the mushrooms.
